Four Nights in the Thorofare, Upper Yellowstone, and Soda Fork

I saw you mention in a comment somewhere that you were headed there or had been there recently. looking forward to reading about and seeing your experience! And I'm glad to have another data point in my 6C3 cold sink microclimate theory.

Four Nights in the Thorofare, Upper Yellowstone, and Soda Fork

Yep, Turpin may be a one-and-done for me after this experience. I had seen others on here saying it was bad, but I underestimated how bad!

Four Nights in the Thorofare, Upper Yellowstone, and Soda Fork

It was great. And that's actually water vapor in the air! The place was completely soaked from the heavy rain the night before, and it was starting to evaporate at that point with the sun.

Four Nights in the Thorofare, Upper Yellowstone, and Soda Fork

Thanks! We had no bugs to contend with. They're usually pretty much gone by that time of year. We used the park's bear hang poles for the two nights in the park, we hung our stuff from trees the third night, and we used the outfitter bear box the fourth night.

Four Nights in the Thorofare, Upper Yellowstone, and Soda Fork

September 3-7, 2026 I usually put off writing these until winter, but I wanted to do this one while it was still somewhat fresh. Also it's pretty wintry outside here now anyway. Instead of our usual type of trip to the SW part of Yellowstone, we opted to do something different this year, a...

Solitude Trail (Cloud Peak Wilderness) - Labor Day Weekend 2026

Beautiful! Haven't seen much from that area in a while on here. Also, I 100% count an overnighter as backpacking, and this definitely could have been in that sub forum. Tons of overnight reports in there, including several of mine

Very nice! I've never walked that trail, but it was a favorite backpacking destination for my grandpa, decades ago. Way to get out there despite the snow.

    Album Campsites

Camped among some larches over the weekend. No edits to the photo; it was the most golden sunrise I've ever had in the backcountry!

    Well, the bugs weren't bad

Great report! Cool to see and read about all the wildlife you saw. I'd have been nervous with a bison walking around camp too.

Boulder Mail Trail - Extensive Flood Damage

Someone posted this one (below) a couple weeks ago! They talk about a flash flood earlier than 9/7. I haven't followed the weather down there super closely, but it seems there could have been multiple big precip events...

    Album Wildflowers

That's an impressive patch of Calypso orchids! Great photos.

    Let's talk books

Going to add these to my list! Thank you! I'm currently reading and enjoying The Overstory, which is fictional. Starts as a bunch of vignettes that are all tied together by their relations to trees and nature, and they slowly come together. Another Pulitzer winner. It's been really great so...

    Guess the spot: Utah Edition

Yeah my photo was 2019. I noticed the lower water level in more recent satellite imagery and didn't realize the dam was breached! All yours if you wanna take it!

Fantastic looking trip! And you hit all the requisite stops on both ends as well. I really enjoyed those shots of the swans.
