Incredible!! Nice timing. Such a unique thing to be able to photograph too. Really enjoyed these.

An Afternoon on Sheep Creek (Custer Gallatin NF)

Very nice! I've never walked that trail, but it was a favorite backpacking destination for my grandpa, decades ago. Way to get out there despite the snow.

Utah Choices .....things could be worse.

Hello there. Just responding to let you know Greg (gnwatts) passed away last year. I imagine someone else on here has some knowledge about that area though and may chime in.

    Album Campsites

Camped among some larches over the weekend. No edits to the photo; it was the most golden sunrise I've ever had in the backcountry!

    Well, the bugs weren't bad

Great report! Cool to see and read about all the wildlife you saw. I'd have been nervous with a bison walking around camp too.

Boulder Mail Trail - Extensive Flood Damage

Someone posted this one (below) a couple weeks ago! They talk about a flash flood earlier than 9/7. I haven't followed the weather down there super closely, but it seems there could have been multiple big precip events...

    Album Wildflowers

That's an impressive patch of Calypso orchids! Great photos.

    Let's talk books

Going to add these to my list! Thank you! I'm currently reading and enjoying The Overstory, which is fictional. Starts as a bunch of vignettes that are all tied together by their relations to trees and nature, and they slowly come together. Another Pulitzer winner. It's been really great so...

    Guess the spot: Utah Edition

Yeah my photo was 2019. I noticed the lower water level in more recent satellite imagery and didn't realize the dam was breached! All yours if you wanna take it!

    Southeast Yellowstone Loop

Fanrastic looking trip! I just got back from a trip covering some of the same ground. That is an impressive route you did.

Chain of Lakes - Yellowstone National Park - August 21, 2026

Fantastic looking trip! And you hit all the requisite stops on both ends as well. I really enjoyed those shots of the swans.

Sorta highish in the Wind Rivers

Love to see a new post from you here, Dave! I had wondered what route you had done from the bits I saw on Instagram. Agreed wholeheartedly with your closing thoughts.

    Hello from Connecticut

Welcome! Any trips planned for the rest of the year?

    Deer and Elk wanted!

I never saw any elk in the Uintas in all my times up there. Heard one bugling in mid September a bit below Naturalist Basin once. Also up near Clyde Lake around the same time of the year.

    Shoshone Lake and geyser basin

Great trip and nice photos! Good choice on the shuttle route. I love the stretch of trail along Shoshone Creek. This one made me laugh. When I stayed there, it was at the end of a long day with rain, snow, and cold wind. That spur trail felt interminable to me at that point.

Current smoke conditions in Winds (and elsewhere--how to assess smoke/haze conditions in general?)

We are finally getting some of that rain up here tonight. Should continue on and off through tomorrow also. I think it will help a lot with the nearby fires. Not so sure about the Oregon and Washington ones though.
