Question Regarding Trail Running Shoes

I have a question regarding trail running shoes. It focuses on fit. I normally wear a 8-8.5 in street shoes and around an 8.5 hiking boot. In road running shoes the brand I went with (New Balance) I end up in a 9.5. I am looking at getting the Salomon Speedcross 3. I tried on a pair of 9's and they felt good in the store, gave me some room in the toe. I am just wondering if anyone has experience with this particular shoe. I also am wondering in regards to trail running shoes how should the shoes fit in the toebox area? Is it better to have a lot of space in the toe area or have a fairly snug fit around the toe?

IMO a shoe that fits too snug in the toe box will cost you some toe nails and a lot of pain going down hill. My feet are a full size different as I am what some people call a "freak of nature." When choosing a shoe I always use the large foot to size my boots/shoes and my smaller foot does just fine.

With trail runners...I was worried about the same thing as my Scott trail runners are 1/2 size smaller that I usually get them. However, after 20 miles of hikes/running they were just fine. My toes were happy. But yes, it's a legitimate concern.

I've also tried on those shoes, and I agree with @pstm13 with fit. Losing a toe nail isn't worth a tighter fit shoe. As long as you can get it tight on your heel, and so the shoe doesn't slip around, (this is why I gave up on Altra for hiking) you should be good. Give yourself a little bit of room. When I tried on the Soloman's I went a half size bigger than i do in my Sportiva Bushidos.
