Hey there hiking friends! I just recently found out about this site through a friend. I am pretty new to hiking, all though I have grown up in Utah and would consider myself a moderate outdoor person, I'm still new to the hardcore hiking scene here. However, I am dying to become more connected with the mother nature that has consummed me my whole life. I want to become more aware of the beauty that surrounds me, and what better way to do that than to be out in nature? If anyone has any beginners tips for gear or manageable day hikes for me to start out on, that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much and I hope to see some of you around the trails.

Welcome..................... ask away with questions, you will get a lot of answers.

what gear questions do you have? The most important gear is your legs and some free time. :)

Hi I'll throw out one piece of gear that may interest you for day hikes. You might want to check out Teton Sports Summit1500 which is a popular and versatile day pack at a relatively low cost. Teton Sports is a company based up there in Salt Lake and have some fairly good products for the price and are a good option, especially for beginners. They even have a showroom that they'd welcome you into to try out some of their gear. I interact with them a lot on Twitter and could hook you up with them if interested. They have great service and are easy to contact with questions about their products, etc.

REI and Recreation Outlet are also great stores where you'll find good variety and selection of gear with pretty good service. Backcountry.com also has their warehouse and store up in West Valley. I also find myself frequenting Sportsmans Warehouse a lot for gear.

We are lucky here in Utah to not only have such great variety in wilderness surrounding us, but with that, lots of good gear stores and companies located here.

Also, seeing that you appear to be in Salt Lake, some beautiful beginner trails up that way that come to mind are Lake Mary, Martha, and Catherine right above Brighton up Big Cottonwood and Cecret Lake next to Alta up Little Cottonwood. Spend enough time here on BCP and elsewhere and your bucket list will quickly grow.

Hey SLC noob! Ogden noob wanting to trade secrets. I have mostly hiked the foothills and backcountry of all things north of SLC but I would really like to get down to the peaks of Salt Lake especially back behind Little Cottonwood or Big Cottonwood canyons. If you have any suggestions or need a hiking buddy let me know. And if you are feeling up to hiking some awesome trails more north bring your friends up and we can go. Just email me jsphbutchr@gmail.com
