Hi, everyone, I'm from NOVA and looking to get into light backpacking/hiking/camping. I have a bad knee (severe pain daily, bones grinding together but I don't qualify for a replacement because I'm "not old enough") so whatever I do it will have to be on the easy side. I've always loved the outdoors and want to get back to camping, I haven't been in ears and when I did it wasn't "real" camping (had toilets/bath house). Anyways, as I said I love the outdoors but don;t get to get out as much as I would like and I love photography as well, particularly wildlife and landscapes. Hoping to learn some and get some good ideas from the forums.

I just got mine replaced at 35! Maybe you need a second opinion?

Oh, and welcome to BCP. :)

Welcome. I'm hoping to do a few days in your area this year. I've never been to Shenandoah and have wanted to make it down to do Old Rag Mtn and Rogers Mtn in the Fall for quite some time. I'm from 6 hrs north of you on the NJ/NY border.

The Shenandoah area is gorgeous, especially in the Fall. Old Rag is very popular among the hikers in the area. I haven't done it personally yet due to my bad knees. i'm hoping I can one day though.

I've seen 4 different Dr's in 2 different practices. All of them say I'm not old enough to qualify, I'm 38 now. I'm not sure if it's an insurance thing or something else. I've pretty much given up because every time I go in they want to send me to PT 3 times a week for 6 weeks and I can't afford that even with insurance (co-pays and time off of work for the appts) not to mention it doesn't help any. I guess I should bring it up to my regular Dr and see what he says.

That's wild. There's a fair amount of info out there about younger patients getting them more and more lately. Like this, for example: http://www.hss.edu/newsroom_not-too-young-knee-replacement.asp#.VMrsDlXF8Yc

I went to a specialist in knee reconstruction and after weighing all the options, he said that made the most sense. He did say he wished I was 5 years older, but it wasn't a big deal at all. My insurance didn't blink an eye.

I'm still not healed up enough to say it was the greatest or worst thing I've ever done, but I have faith it'll be better than any of the alternatives I had in front of me.
