Help! First Trip to the Winds.

How in the world do you guys take cheese? Every time I have tried it it turns disgusting in about 2 hours.
I always take cheese. In the mountains I can usually get 2 days out of string cheese, 3 days out of a good colby and if you take a real hard cheese like parmesan it will last the whole trip. The first two can get softer and eventually a little greasy. Another tip that may help me is that I take a frozen 1/2 stick of butter and package it all up together to help all of it stay cold. I like having the extra calories and taste bump from the butter since I am not taking commercial backpacking food.

I'd chuck the Honeybun and add to oatmeal packets....(then I add a Honey Stinger packet to mine)
Foil packs of flavored tuna are great, good and light as well.......
If you pack you cheese and chocolate wrapped in clothes in the middle of you pack is usually stays way cool and doesn't melt...

All in all you food list is good.... :)

Last trip with Art ...... I think he packed a 2lb block of cheese to go with his gourmet cooking........while I eat freeze dried

But...but..but... I love the honeybun! Such a nice, sweet treat!....oatmeal would be better for me.... gah.

I have tuna on my list. I love those to-go lunch packets. I didn't know if tuna would be a good thing to bring to the winds though. Am I being a bit to paranoid about bears? Or does it not even mater. I just assumed that tuna might be a smell that bears like more. is that silly?

Paranoid....... yes. Just rinse the packet off in a creek, dry and put in you odorless bag. No need to be paranoid, just practice good bear sense. I take tuna packets for lunch on all my trips, I still have all my parts...well maybe lost my mind.

I saw a black bear on my solo traverse (green River Lakes to Big Sandy) of the winds last year. It was near Halls Lake. I started seeing bear crap going up Hay Pass near Dennis Lake, and continued to see bear crap for another day's hike until I saw the bear near Halls. It was about 100lbs, small enough to be a little worried that the mother was around. Thankfully, it was not, and it just ran away when it saw me. It was about 75 yards away when I stumbled upon it.

Hey Blake
Here's wishing you safe travels on your trip.
What's your tenative itinerary?
We will be around Hobbs or Seneca on the 22nd then into Titcomb or Jean lakes or vice-versa, depending on the weather. You thinking about Knapsack Col?
Hope to see ya on the trail !
Cheers

Hey isleroyaleguy :)
We should be on our way back to Wall lake on the 22nd. Our Plan A doesn't have us going over Knapsack Col :(

Thanks, I was surprised it all fit in my Ursack! I had to cut a lot of food from my orginal food menu to make it happen though, but I think I will eat well enough. If I had to I think I could cut out a few more items and still feel pretty good about what I had to eat every day.

Yeah, it is an ambitious trip (for me). I have been trying to get in shape for it over the last 6 months. Hopefully the weather plays nice, and our bodies can handle the hiking well so that we can accomplish our Plan A trip. But.... if I have to basecamp in Titcomb the whole 6 days, I don't think you will hear me complaining much ;) haha

Good luck on your trip as well!

Of my trips to the Winds, I would say Island Lake, Titcomb basin, Indian Basin, and climbing Fremont are absolute highlights. See my trip report here:
http://forums.backpacker.com/topic/trip-report-wind-river-2012-8803801/

Be sure to carry plenty of water for Fremont. I've climbed it twice and have ran short both times. It is very exposed to the sun. If you have any questions about route finding let me know. I may be able to help.

I saw on metalbackpacker's website where the route around Alpine Lakes is tricky. I've never descended over the east side of Indian Pass but that would be quite a wild area to explore.

Look forward to reading a trip report when you get back.
Have a great trip!
