Hard work on the trail--literally

Yesterday was the last day to do trail work this year. I did a total of seventeen days. This last section was "armoring" a trail in a new park in Napa, not yet open to the public. We're focusing on the sections that are going to be wet after a rain, and deeply setting large rocks---because the trail will be used for MTBs as well as hikers and horsemen. And those MTBs really chew up a muddy trail. Note the size of some of the rocks in these photos, and how we wedge them all in together tightly. Demanding work, but we were a great crew, and got the job done!

There were two different sections like this--plus another section where we actually built it a small ramp/jump for MTBs who wanted to "get a little air."

It's all part of a large vision for these parks and their use.

Awesome work! Too many times have I run and walked trails that are rutted deeply by bikes (motor and human powered) to the point that you can't find a flat place to put your foot. That's a good solution with the large rocks.

Thanks for your hard work. That's a lot of days! My tally for work on my local trails comes to 96 hours for this year. Sometimes that meant much of a day working on something, other times just a half hour spent clearing a downed tree. I didn't get all my goals accomplished (a trail maintainers work is never done!), but finishing off the renovating of a 2km trail that I had been picking away at mostly solo since 2019, was satisfying. Even more gratifying is seeing that usage of this once overgrown and almost forgotten trail has increased tenfold. Somewhere near you is a trail that needs some love!
