Great start to a trip, except for the "long plod through thick forest". I see enough of that hiking in the SE Appalachians, I want views when I hike out west :)
Out of curiosity, did you have any problem finding denatured alcohol? I think they stopped selling it in CA and NV which makes Sierra...
I have the same scheduling issues as a lecturer. It is about 8 hours from SLC to Bishop, CA which gives you the heart of the High Sierra. I've only had one bad bug trip in the last week of July/first week of Aug and it was a high snow year. The flowers were awesome, the bugs not so much :)
Weird, I would have assumed griz would be in ID since they are in the North Cascades and the GYE and the Glacier area. Are the Sawtooths that isolated from the other mountain ranges?
I'm not a climber so would never do something like this, but I love seeing it. The photo that you labeled "sams" looks incredible.
Do you use "normal" miso paste? or is it something special?
Very nice that you came back to update the original thread. I was reading through the recommendations and noting the dates of the posts and it felt like a horror movie where you know something bad is going to happen, just not sure when.
Glad you were able to eventually do your trip
Bob's CalTopo loop has the first night at Dream Lake. As I said earlier, you could basecamp there and see some amazing sites or you could do the loop if you felt up to it.
Here is a trip I did out of Scab Creek https://backcountrypost.com/threads/wind-river-range-sept-2021-part-1.10345/
I'd vote Point Reyes, it might not be foggy
Here is a trip report that says August, but was actually June https://backcountrypost.com/threads/point-reyes-august-2022.10647/
The north or south rim of Yosemite Valley is totally doable in June...
Not a lottery, but it felt like it. I managed to get two nights in the Lodgepole campground in SEKI before a 5 night trip with my oldest. The actual backpacking permit was easy since very few people use the Alta trail.
My other big trips for the summer are looking like 5ish nights in the Winds...
This was posted on High Sierra Topix and I thought that people here might like to read it.

Nancy Pallister has a little bit extra in a reply to the original post https://www.highsierratopix.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=23455
Agree on the 5 days, it feels like the Winds start "slower" than the eastern Sierra.
One possible trip is Scab Creek to Dream Lake and set up your base camp. Lots of potential day hikes from there. Caltopo says about 10ish miles and 1600' of elevation.
Never mind about the Mountain Creek to Open Creek question, I found this "Now as far as I know there are no routes or paths from the Open Creek Drainage over to the Mountain Creek Drainage. The high peak ridge here between the two is really quite something" from @Kmatjhwy on this thread...
I have spent too much time in Caltopo looking at routes to get up to the Trident Plateau. I looks like a good lollipop would be Ishawooa - Open Creek to the Fish and Game cabin then up and over the Trident to Mountain Creek and then south along the Thorofare Trail and out Open Creek or Pass...
Looks like you got pretty lucky with the weather. How were the bugs?
I don't like snakes, but I guess those two are better than the rattlesnakes :)
thanks for all the photos
The lake photo right after the "east rosebud creek" one looks awesome. All the flowing water looks pretty good as well. Based on your photos, I'd definitely like to spend some time in the area.
I think it is pretty neat that you are still friends with the same group this many years later...
