    2024 Permits/Lotteries

I got April 11th. After not getting an opportunity last year, I was nervous this year. But I’m happy I got something!

    Greetings from Ohio!

Thanks for the warning Absarokanaut. While I’m interested in seeing the area, I’m not that interested in being eaten by a grizzly. Or involved with one in any other way.

    Greetings from Ohio!

Hi Absarokanaut! Herring Lake is the one that you have to go off trail, or maybe on a social trail, right? I’m not too interested in that. What’s scary about Beulah? So far, the only place that I wouldn’t go back to solo, is the backcountry site below Mt. Washburn. It’s just too far from...

    Greetings from Ohio!

Hi Cabshire. I live in the area, and being retired, could go on your days off. I am, however, not a super strong hiker, so do not eat up the miles. If you want to do any overnights, and just want company, let me know. This summer, I would like to get to some places in the south of the...

    jacket repair

I’d contact the manufacturer. They might have some helpful suggestions, and sometimes they will fix it for a small sum, or even free.

    To Do in 2024

I got a brand new TITANIUM knee in mid-December. I capitalized it because hikers love titanium. :-) Now I’m working on getting my knee rehabbed enough to be able to go hike in Yellowstone. I’d like to go just about anywhere, but I’d like to join Scatman and wife at Grebe Lake, and I’d like to...

Yellowstone Lake to Brooks Lake (Aug 2023)

That was fun! Thanks for taking us on a trip to the Thorofare. The bear pictures were awesome!

Has anyone had a knee replaced, and still backpacks?

Good for your dad, UtahBrian. I just hope to have the fortitude to hike my little hikes. It sure sounds like the hiking is up to me, not the parts.

Has anyone had a knee replaced, and still backpacks?

Thank you so much for the responses. My surgeon said I should be able to hike next summer, as long as I do the physical therapy stuff, and I’m very motivated. I wonder about little things, like getting up from my tent. But I’m glad people are saying they have run into hikers are doing fine. I...

Packing your pack, what goes where?

Thank you for so many thoughtful responses. I do most of what you all are suggesting. I started using less organizer bags quite a while ago, because they do create little softball size round things to try to stuff somewhere. In response, I got a schnozzle bag, and put all my dry camp things...

Bechler 4 (and the Pitchstone Plateau)

Scatman, don’t be asking why an area doesn’t get used more. Shhhhh. It’s a bad, bad place, with no views. Nothing to see here, folks.

Packing your pack, what goes where?

Basically, that’s what I do. But I’m seeing a trend… I rarely wedge things in. I saw one YouTube where the guy fit his tightly rolled sleeping pad into a gap, and another where a person folded their sleeping pad, and put it somewhere. I try to roll mine, but I can’t ever get it too tight. I...

Packing your pack, what goes where?

I backpack alone mostly, but when I go with others, I notice that my pack looks about the size of a Sherman tank compared to the packs others often have. And when I hang my food bag, well, the people in the Sherman tank will have plenty to eat. I always thought that I just packed too much, but...

Has anyone had a knee replaced, and still backpacks?

The title covers the issue. I’m going to get a brand new knee! But I am wondering, from people who have had this done, how the replacement impacts their backpacking. My surgeon says I’ll be able to go backpacking next summer. If you’ve had a knee replaced, how has it impacted your...

    DeLacy to Dogshead

I might be off on the weight, I’ll try to weigh it later today. I do think that’s close, though. As to working in the open, or in a breeze, whenever I use it, after a couple of minutes, I evaluate whether it seems to be working, and move it if necessary. If much breeze is blowing, it will...

    DeLacy to Dogshead

Thanks for taking us along on your trip! The pictures were great. I take a Thermocell when I think mosquitoes my be out and about (i.e. every time). It usually means that there is a 10-15 foot diameter area where the bugs aren’t. I think it weighs about 8 ounces, and saves my sanity. :-)...

Thorofare, Heart Lake, Snake River Sept. 2023

Great trip report, and wonderful pictures. That elk looks like the logo for Hartford Insurance. That’s a great bear encounter story. Thank you for writing up your trip!

Bechler 4 (and the Pitchstone Plateau)

So beautiful. Thank you for sharing the trip report. I’ve been to most of those spots, but it took me a number of trips to get there. The books I have, indicate that the Pitchstone campsites may not have water. I went there one Labor Day, and carried a gallon of water with me, because I...

The Gallatin River, Bighorn and Fawn Passes, Yellowstone National Park - September 7, 2023

Scatman, your pink ensemble is great. It stands out in the wilds, yet is fashionable and functional. Thanks for all the great pictures and commentary. It’s the other side of the park from me, but I hope to explore there some. But heck, it’s all beautiful.

Short Motor Trip Thru Cody, Cooke City

I love those places. In fact, I did a clockwise trip yesterday, to many of them. I didn't turn off to the South Fork, or go up the Sunlight Basin road, but otherwise, I did that loop. It's a blessing to be here. Scatman, which pass did the folks from MAJO Ranch name?
