I did CG in late June (!!), and there is now sand between Hole in the Rock road and the water tower parking. I saw quite a few 4x4s parked along this road, but most seemed to be rentals.
I have an Outback with truck tires, and she made it no problems what so ever. The sand was DEEP, but was...
Yeah, from what we were told at work, REI lost money last year (A LOT) and due to co-op laws, dividends had to change - hence the name change. Difference this year is cannot cash it out, and it will expire at the end of this year.
Also there is a coupon active now until Monday - there are some...
2 weeks ago I went drove down Spencer Creek Road, and found the BEST "campground"! When I got home and got on the inreach.garmin.com website (I have the $30 a year iPhone app), i noticed i was "fairly close" to red breaks. Like 2 miles as the crow flies.
Anyways, has anyone done RedBreaks from...
i would call the ranger station. Some people were headed up there this week, and the ranger told them snow was at around 10,000 feet in the winds (patchy) and tetons were still at 8500 feet.
ok cool, great info! we will have basically Friday Sat and most of sunday - then head back, so not trying to do too much in a small amount of time.
any other recommendations that are amazing but not super time consuming driving to? I have kept an eye on the 14ers.com trailhead and peak...
my buddy is flying into SLC from Portland on Thursday, and we are heading over to the San Juan mountains to do some backpacking/photography. Ice Lake Basin/Blue Lake Basin is for sure, but we are interested in Velocity Basin - but am unsure about the roads.
I don't have a true 4WD - just an...
so a co-worker of mine that teaches the paid compass and maps class at REI told me about some apps that he uses and recommends. One is "Topo Maps" by Phil Endecott. It is $7.99 once i believe and you can download any amount of maps. It is for iOS. I just got an iPhone yesterday, so will be...
I got an MSR trailshot. I was using a first need XLE purifier, but was heavier and i don't need a purifier. The hose can be changed out for a longer one. Back flushing is easy, and i think it is recommended to back flush every 8 liters or so - but takes 10 seconds. You can also do an integrity...
I've used the Earthmate App - and it is FANTASTIC. Delorme was bought by Garmin some 16 months ago or so - now it is a Garmin product. $29 a year, but you have access to all maps from Delorme/Garmin. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/577212
the Canon 16-35 f/4 IS is a pretty fantastic lens.
I just upgraded from my Nikon D610 recently to a Sony A7r. Not only did i upgrade image quality a ton, but i saved weight and space, as the A7r is quite a bit smaller. I use a Nikon 14-24 right now as my wide angle, but am selling that next...
i had a jet boil flash for several years and sold it last year for the MSR windburner. The jetboil would struggle in wind, whereas the windburner does really well in low winds. Obviously nothing is windproof, but works great thus far (used it twice in the wind rivers last summer)
so i have 2 separate 5 day "weekends" off in April!
the main attraction i want to get to is the alcove (and the slot canyon) that you visited in this thread https://backcountrypost.com/threads/return-to-fiftymile.5243/
hopefully it is accessible by hiking? The water level right now is 3594...
i am always impressed by your photos and trips you go on! Thanks for the info as well! I bet not a lot of people head out there on foot. I will be taking a mountain bike down there, as i doubt a rental would get all the way down HITR - unless an outback would?
i want to do this hike this april, along with reflection canyon. I know that historically March-April is month where Powell is at its' lowest level. My main goal is to hike the "narrows". Does anyone know if the canyons are accessible to hiking - or rather at what water level it would be submerged?
three sisters wilderness is like 40 mile loop or something if i remember. I prefer Jefferson Park near Mt. Jefferson to the three sisters wilderness. But you could see quite a bit with a 4 day trip through 3 sisters. Mt. Jeff is like a 7 mile hike to the park. that place is phenomenal!
