It's never too late! Nothing hits quite like a trip to somewhere warm and tropical in mid-March. I went to Hawaii almost exactly two years ago and the timing was just right, being late winter.
It's 60 here today though, so the warm weather came to me instead this year.
Looking pretty grim up here also. Winter so far has not given me much hope for a turnaround later this month or in April. Guess it's time to dust off and tune up the gravel bike.
Great point on the methods, and I appreciate the insight! I'm mostly an outside observer of UL/thru hiking culture through sites like Reddit, so there's some observer bias on my part too. You know how reddit can be. I was surprised the Durston tents were priced so low. Pretty solid offerings at...
It's also interesting in that some brands are overrepresented while other large ones don't even show up. Presumably because the online thru hiking/ultralight community, like most other hobby communities online, becomes a gear optimization echo chamber, and everyone ends up mostly sticking to the...
I had read that there was a lot more falling south of here. Great news!
Targhee got about a foot in the two days we were there. Best skiing I've had all season.
Some shots from xc skiing the Fan Creek area a week ago. We stopped and did 5-6 miles on our way down to Grand Targhee. Pretty weak and very crusty coverage for early February in this part of the park, but they've gotten a foot or more since this at least. Usually one of the snowiest parts of...
And just to clarify, the poles to make it free-standing aren't trekking poles, but rather are flexible poles like a regular dome tent has, where they cross each other in the center of the tent, and their length is probably specific to the tent.
As shown here:
I have neither tent but do have a couple thoughts.
Important to note that the Scarp isn't free standing unless you buy and use the optional cross poles, which add another 10 or 18 oz depending on which pole material you choose. Since you need a free standing tent, that means the Scarp would...
Incredible looking outing! Those cold temperatures would have been difficult though, sweating and then having it freeze probably almost instantly once you head downhill. Terrain looks absolutely amazing though. What a blast.
Hey, speak for yourself! Haha.
Had me laughing out loud with your descriptions of those habits. Have done all of those before also. I definitely have a lot of room for improvement but hope to have some grace by the end of this season. Ha.
It's not cheap, but the Meidjo 3.0 is a tele binding that has the option for a lockable...
I only took one alpine lesson and skied just two days on alpine bindings before I switched fully to tele last year. Was interested in it because, like you, I started on fish scale bc xc skis (which I don't spend enough time on nowadays).
I've kind of learned both tele and alpine at the same...
Very awesome! I've xc skied up that trail before but turned around after a few miles. Cool to see farther up, and I'll have to give that a go sometime! Refrigerated Cold Smokes at camp is luxury living!
Also cool to see you went to Quake Lake. One of my favorite roadside spots. If you ever go...
Love seeing those backcountry tele turns! I just started tele skiing last season. Just wish we could get snow like that here this season. Next storm should help, but we won't get multiple feet like you guys.
