    Fuel Canister refiller

Got the exact same thing and been using it two years. Weigh the canister as I go just like you to be safe. I’ll never go back to carrying partial canisters plus a full one again. This method solved my only nit with canister fuel. We hike year round but don’t have the intense cold issues that...

Welcome to the First Day of Winter

Holey moley, I was 16 last time I’ve seen temps like that and that was about a hundred years ago. Lol And I was thinking our +45°temps a week or so ago were too cold. Southern Arizona here but at that cold time it was the Turtle Mountain Plateau ten miles south of the border in North Dakota...

    Off Trail Advice

I used to live in Hollywood, Florida, graduated HHH, Hollywood Hills High. There were no hills other than the bridge over the intercoastal canal. Florida is Atlantic Plain. The mountain systems and intermontane plateau systems of the west are where it’s at. Go to the San Rafael Swell, the Reef...

White Pocket - Lone Tree Road / Southern Road

The intermittent areas of deep sand make even the better 4wDs with high clearance become bogged down at times. There is some pretty bad info on what is okay. We walked cross country, carried enough water for a night and two days. There is a lot of surreal stuff out there that made it very...

Pacific Crest Trail (NOBO) Part 10/10

Was it the Zen monks who said, “when you reach the top of the mountain, keep climbing. “ Your entire trip report is very enjoyable. I’ve read several books by those who hike the various long trails and know a couple who have hiked the shorter Arizona trail. The PCT is the most interesting. All...

THE GOLDEN STAIRS, KAIPAROWITS PLATEAU, A SEQUEL

The Kaiparowits Plateau is such a strange place. I wonder if the sharks tooth is from the ancient western inland sea or if it was humped in from the coast a thousand years ago for trade. Sea shells were highly praised trade items. That fetish is an amazing work of art. It sure looks human made...

Will the new iPhone make PLBs obsolete?

The new satellite connectivity is extremely interesting and does matter quite a bit. Given time this will see advancements. Of course this won’t replace common sense for newbs or those curmudgeons who live on a computer but obtusely decry tech advancements. Lol For me, one who has used gps...

    Silty water filtration

Interesting. When did you go? It’s been near 20 years that we found that seep. We didn’t filter that water as it travels through a lot of material and did come out pure and naturally filtered.

    flash flooding summer 2022

“DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — Record rainfall Friday trigged flash floods at Death Valley National Park that swept away cars, closed all roads and stranded hundreds of visitors and workers.” And I thought like most of the Mojave they usually only received winter storm rainfall but it...

    Abrasion-proof pack repair?

Barge cement will hold a patch and not peel off for me. Put it on the patch and the pack, then press together. I try real hard not to drag the pack on sandstone if possible. It does immediately eat it.

    flash flooding summer 2022

KWC, We had to live on the Turtle Mountain Plateau (Rez) in North Dakota for two years when I was a teenager. It was common to see -40°. I left home and drifted to Florida to finish high school without the family and swore I’d never live anywhere cold again. Winters are mild in southern Arizona...

    flash flooding summer 2022

Totally agree, amazing but like everything on the Plateau ferocious winds are common and way too cold in winter for us too.

    flash flooding summer 2022

We are under the same monsoonal flow with flash flood advisories. Colorado radar returns looked like it was really getting hammered earlier today and that went over almost to Salt Lake. Rain here too. Capitol Reef is amazing. We have done some things there and once bushwhacked a big loop to the...

What does "car camping" mean, in your opinion?

We have a nice large tent for car camping too, an REI basecamp 6 that we can stand up in. It has survived some real strong storms. The Helinox cots fit easily with lots of room left over and they are like sleeping on a cloud.

What does "car camping" mean, in your opinion?

We’ve only had to actually sleep in the SUV twice, once for a small herd of cattle whose lead female seemed to take strong affection to me, didn’t want to get accidentally trampled in the night. That was near Round Valley Draw. Don’t remember the reason for that other time, maybe severe weather...

How doable is the sneak route out of Death Hollow with kids and a dog?

Never tried it but met a guy who said he just dropped down in that way. He was wearing his pack on his chest instead of his back so I had a funny thought that he might be some kind of space alien who didn’t know how to wear it right. Girlfriend assured me I was just being silly. We met a lot of...

    flash flooding summer 2022

About two weeks ago we walked into the wilderness in southern Arizona. There had been some storms overnight so we checked the radar and did see a lot of green returns moving off but no yellow or orange showing major cells. Everything was bone dry and not even a smattering of raindrops, nothing...
