Backpacking the Winds: From Elkhart TH to Titcomb Basin, July 2018

I was mid twenties back then. Not hugely difficult. Pretty much a scramble to the top. No ropes or anything really tricky. The thing I remember was the thunderstorm that moved in while we were on top. We had to hide under huge boulders until it passed. A lot of electricity in the air and scary...

Backpacking the Winds: From Elkhart TH to Titcomb Basin, July 2018

Great trip, report and pictures!! Really excellent pictures!!! Barely brings back memories of a 10 day trip we did in the late 70's. (Lack of brain cells )I'll have to ask my buddies if they still have slides of our trip. Summited Fremont Peak and caught and ate Golden trout in Mistake lake...

    NW Colorado Snow conditions

I think you're right. When you go this long between storms, there is virtually no bonding to the new layers of snow. Once heavily loaded ...easily triggered. People are really going to need to pay attention. @Yvonne Yes!!! A big snowy winter would be stellar!!

    NW Colorado Snow conditions

Just an update for those who care. After a record October start, we just went over 21 days without any precipitation. Day time temps in the 50's. Our new ski area owners felt compelled to open early 0n Nov 15 (1 lift and 10 runs. 1 legit run.) just to brag that we had the goods. Yay!!!! we...

    NW Colorado Snow conditions

Just when you think it's going to be the sickest winter ever....... I'm always leery about early snow. We had a record October for snow. Now we're back into a prolonged high pressure scenario. Daytime temps are back in the high 40's/50s. At least the night temps are low 20s to teens, so they can...

    NW Colorado Snow conditions

They're discouraging us from skiing the ski hill, so Rabbit Ears and Buffalo Pass should both have plenty of snow. Maybe mess around on some low angle hills. I have become more cautious over the years, as I have had many a friend, screw up their ski season by dropping pitches with very thin snow...

Sorry, didn't mean to leave all of you others out of this, that live in the Rocky Mts states. Especially Montana with a 48 inch snowfall earlier in the month.

    NW Colorado Snow conditions

Wow!! What a crazy October!! It is currently -11 degrees F on the last day of October (Halloween), here in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. There is snow on the ground in the valley, and it is probably not going anywhere until next spring. Beginning around Oct 10, we have had 6 measurable snow...

    Floating the Yampa through Dinosaur

Love it! Sweet trip!!!! Looks like you guys ate well. Seems to me you guys needed a few boating Bettys to join your trip, though. Good amusement at the Jones hole falls for sure!! Have done both the Yampa and Lodore over a half dozen times each. Kinda our home rivers from Steamboat. Have swam...

    Colonnade Arch road conditions

@SteveR Your friends should have no problem driving out there in their truck. I thought road conditions were very good. Thanks @Udink Similar road conditions to what you reported. Could there be some kind of pipeline? Odd all the survey stakes in a very straight line. Thanks @Nick for your...

    Colonnade Arch road conditions

@SteveR I'll be glad to give a road report after our visit. I think the F150 and Expedition use the same chassis... though they may have different height clearances. Thanks for the Kelsey disclaimer. I've learned to always add time and "up the difficulty factor" to his estimates. Hopefully...

    Colonnade Arch road conditions

Thanks , I'm sure things haven't changed too much out there, unless there was a big gully washer since then. I'm feeling pretty good about getting to the trailhead. Excited to visit a new area. There's a lot around here I need to see.

    Colonnade Arch road conditions

Thanks @SteveR I think we'll be fine driving out there. Hopefully, the sideslipped dirt area, that got @Udink years ago, is in better shape. Better bring a shovel. :D Was hoping someone had been out this way recently with most current road conditions. I'll talk with BLM guys in Hanksville on...

Hi all, long time no see. My wife and I are heading down to the Hanksville area to meet up with a bunch of folks for a long weekend. Starting Sept 19. In other words, next weekend. On Friday, most of them are planning on hiking around the Irish canyons and Hog Springs. Since we've been in...
