Something a little different… these are from the Glen Canyon project and were recovered in the 1950s shortly before the filling of Lake Powell. They are in collection at the University of Utah/Natural History Museum of Utah but are not generally shown to the public.

Very cool. Thanks for posting these, Dave. I was really bummed that I was fresh out of knee surgery and unable to go see them.

I think I found the original flying speghetti monster. 20141025_144807.jpg

That's why I generally don't like museums. They scoop things up in the name of preservation and lock them in the basement and you can't look at them. I do realize everything can't be on display.....would be a huge building. They just put out a few 'interesting' items.

Although private diggers digging and selling is worse......

Totally agree, but in the case of glen canyon artifacts I think they are just overwhelmed with everything they had to salvage as the waters rose. Seems like there could be an entire museum about America's lost national park.

Remember as well that museums don't have interpretation as their sole mission. In the case of the collections, many of the items would not survive long-term exhibits. They are maintained in a controlled environment for longevity. Many of the items at NHMU, while not available for public view, ARE referenced by researchers.

"Researchers" is the key here......... almost no one is a researcher, I am not, so it's locked up out of site, I can't view them. Long term exhibits or a room could be 'controlled' for the items to last. Public owned, but not available to the public......like so much anymore.
