@slc_dan found post at beginning of thread noting breed. =)

For all the dog lovers out there, check out TurboPUP. We saw them at the OR show and they're a really cool company. Basically, it's an entire meal for your dog in a bar about the size of your phone. The owner is a decorated US Air Force Vetran and super cool dog owner who hikes, camps, skis, etc with her dog. She needed a solution to keep her dog fed and energized on these trips, and invented the TurboPUP bar with her husband who is a food scientist. She was pretty stoked to hear that we have our own thread dedicated to our dogs. She's a great person and it'll be awesome to see her company keep growing. I'll do a little bigger product feature in the review section later, but in the mean time, check out her stuff. Fender loves his TurboPUP bars and it really cuts down on the bulk and weight of food needed for my dog on backcountry adventures.

Read about the background of the company and owners here:

I have no affiliation with the company, I just really like their products and what they stand for.

OK, back to our thread roots, our Dogs in the Backcountry...

Merlin, my now-91 desert-rat companion demonstrating that you don't need no stinkin', high-tech, sticky rubber to descend the steeps of the Dirty Devil even carrying a load.

Kind of takes is out of a man though. Merlin napping using whatever pillow is at hand.

This is Isaac, almost a year and a half ago, when he was almost six months. He's yellow lab mixed with a gray pointer. They had twelve black puppies. I don't think i've ever met any one faster than him. Or that likes hiking as much as i do.
We're getting ready to descend to the bottom of Bruneau Canyon.

Here he is getting ready for the short bit of hand and toe climbing. 286.JPG
And here at the bottom tuckered out after a couple miles along the bottom. 268.JPG

Bruneau! Was it hard to get him to tolerate him being in the pack. I never did get my dogs to like being in a pack or hanging from a rope in their harness for that matter.

not a good picture, old ipod camera, bad light, but it's the best i've got of this. he held perfectly still except to turn his head to look over my other shoulder, didn't make a sound until i let him out and then abandoned him to go back for the gear, at which point he barked wildly. it'd be harder to take him like this now, he's about twenty pounds heavier. i took this picture while i was holding on to the wall with one hand though and the camera with the other.

You and me both, brother. C'mon people let's see your dogs! Here is my second child, Luna. She is another rescued border collie. My 4th BC but the only real one as far as hyper-athletic, hyper-active, task-centric, anal, handful. Boy do I love her. A very small (runt) collie. She is cooling off in the waters of Saddlehorse canyon in our precious San Rafael Swell after yet another lightning run.

That girl was Darby and tied with an aussie for the best dogs I've had. She passed away in 2009 at 15 years.
