I have seen Bob post a a few times on how he prefers Elkhart to Green River to avoid the climb out of the valley. My rookie reasoning is if we start at Green River we will have that extra day of acclimation and it looks like a beautiful hike to start trip. More so then out of Elkhart. But again we are Winds rookies. How do others feel about this. Just wondering. Easy enough to switch plans either way.
Happy Trails.

I think the trail and views from elkhart are amazing. Wait...let me restate that, the WINDS are amazing. You can't go wrong really. Personal preference aside, you are going to love it. The acclimatization will be a process. If you only plan to go less than 10 miles a day you should be fine no matter what. Then by day 3 you should be all sorts of thick blooded. :D
Depending on your physical fitness and mental preparedness you should be fine either way. Plan it out and then adjust your plans once you get there. I'm excited for you. It's been a few years since I've been there and I want to get back badly. Hopefully as soon as the little one can carry her own pack. :)

Have fun and share your story when you get back.

Salud!

Elevation at Three forks is about 9400. If you camp at Hobbs lake its about 10,000. Camp at Island Lake or lower Ticomb area its about 10,600 All pretty easy trail hiking..... We are probably camping Mon nite at Hobbs or Seneca, then Tues by the pothole at Ticomb the second nite, unless we get a decent start and try for the pothole the first nite, but that's about 12 miles. Then its over Indian Pass....

When we hiked out from Cube Pass to Green River TH.... It just looked like a long UP grind to Cube Pass of about 13 miles...... I hate going uphill all day..

Either way you'll have a great trip. The old saying applies 'climb high, sleep low' for a reason.

Thanks you guys for response.
Your right either way it will be awesome. Hopefully our training will pay off. We hope to camp around Beaver Park the first night. So our second day would be all up but not long mile-wise. We plan to stay at Hobbs or Seneca our last night. Which would you recommend for fishing opportunities? Bob, I hope you guys have a great trip. Your itinerary looks incredible.
Will be in Pinedale at Log Cabin on Sunday.
Happy Trails.

We went from Green River to Elkhart last year, and it was a great route. The hike up to Summit lake second day was pretty tough, but not bad imo.

As far as fishing goes, I killed it with a Jakes in most lakes we stopped at. Only fished a bit though.

Scenery wise, I'd pick Hobbs over Seneca. Fishing should be good at both. I did watched a guy hook and land a nice cutt at Hobbs on our hike out a few years ago. If you camp at Seneca the north end is the only really decent area for campsites. I'd decide then before going on as the trail climbs up the ridge pretty high along the west side of Seneca.

So did I. Thanks for Jakes tip SLC Dan.
They worked great. Got some extras to try this winter. Jigging walleye through the ice.
